The Art of Self-Defense movie costumes on display…

In the dark comedy, The Art of Self-Defense, Jesse Eisenberg plays ‘Casey Davies’, a mil-mannered accountant who is attacked on the street by a roving motorcycle gang and decides to study martial arts as a way to defend himself. Studying under Alessandro Nivola’s ‘Sensei’ at the karate dojo he finds a new sense of self confidence, but when he attends the Sensei’s mysterious night classes he discovers a world of fraternity, brutality and hyper-masculinity.

In director Mimi Leder’s legal biopic, On the Basis of Sex, Felicity Jones plays a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg early in in her Law School life and teaching career post graduation in 1960s and 1970s America. The film follows an early tax law case which RBG and her husband ‘Martin’ (Armie Hammer) take on, which paves the way to a groundbreaking gender equality ruling and cements her place as a formidable lawyer and future U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

If Beale Street Could Talk film costumes on display…

Barry Jenkins adaption of James Baldwin’s 1974 book, If Beale Street Could Talk, is a heartwarming and beautifully filmed love story, but equally an infuriating tale of racism and social injustice for black people in America. Set in 1970s New York City, KiKi Layne stars as ‘Clementine “Tish” Rivers’ whose artist boyfriend ‘Alozo “Fonny” Hunt’ is falsely accused and incarcerated for raping a woman. The pregnant Tish turns to her parents for support, ‘Sharon’ and ‘Jospeh Rivers’ (played by Oscar-winning Supporting Actress Regina King and Colman Domingo). Sharon tracks down and flies to Puerto Rico to try and convince the victim of Fonny’s innocence, whilst Joseph hustles the streets of Harlem to provide money for his legal fees.

Outlaw King movie costumes on display…

In Netflix’s historical drama Outlaw King, Chris Pine plays ‘Robert the Bruce’, the 14th century Scottish King who took on and defeated the superior occupying English army forces of ‘Edward I’. The action takes place from around 1304 when the ‘Outlaw King’ decides to rebel, up to the 1307 Battle of Loudoun Hill. Robert Bruce is wedded to Irish nobility, ‘Elizabeth de Burgh’, his second wife, under orders from the King of England, whilst upon his death ‘Edward, Prince of Wales’ takes over his father’s forces, is defeated by Robert Bruce, but is released and is crowned ‘Edward II’.

Bohemian Rhapsody movie costumes on display…

The music biopic Bohemian Rhapsody scored over $903.6 million at the global box office proving there are still a great many fans of Freddie Mercury and Queen around the world. Rami Malek also took home the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as the rock band’s bisexual front man. The film told the story of the formation of the iconic British band, their unconventional approach to music, Freddie Mercury’s detour into a solo career and their reunion for their infamous performance at 1985’s Live Aid concert.

It was great to see these costumes exhibited again out of reflective display cases with all the jewelry accessories like on the white stage costume recreation of Sandra Rhodes original design, plus the additional glittering sequin bodysuit outfit and a look inside Freddie Mercury’s regal party outfit.

Screen-used Marvel Cinematic Universe movie props on display…

In addition to a smorgasbord of costumes from Avengers: Endgame on display during its theatrical release, Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre also had an exhibit of selected screen-used props to pay homage to the last ten years and twenty-two films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the cinema’s foyer along Hollywood Boulevard on May 1, 2019, there was the damaged Iron Man Mark 50 helmet from Avengers: Endgame in the spotlight, with the eye socket illuminated. In the movie Robert Downey Jr.’s ‘Tony Stark’ records what he think are his dying words into the helmet when he’s floating in space.

Downstairs at the cinema there was a treasure trove of other film props on display, like the Eye of Agamotto from Doctor Strangewhich is also featured in Avengers: Endgame, worn by the Master of the Mystic Arts himself (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).
